Biography

Spencer Gray, photographed in infrared — the artist behind Ars Photonica
A portrait in infrared — the maker, in the same light he gathers.

Spencer is a molecular biologist and photographer based in Bloomington, Indiana, working under the name of Ars Photonica.

Spencer's education in biology-- a bachelor's in Molecular Biology from Defiance College and a Ph.D. in Genome, Cell, and Developmental Biology from Indiana University-- fundamentally shaped how he came to view and understand our world. He spent many of his years understanding the parts of our world that do not announce themselves to our eyes; DNA, RNA, and proteins that all lay beyond human vision but nonetheless drive every facet of our living world.

The same habit of attention to the unseen he has now turned to the landscape. Great revelations have come from humanity's creation of instruments to observe what our eyes cannot. The work here in the Codex Lucis, a Book of Light, is presented as another entry in our catalog of shared understanding of the world around us.

I'd be glad to hear from you! If you've spent some time with the work and want to ask about a print, an exhibition, or the process behind a particular image, this is the place to do it. I read everything that comes through, and sometimes I even remember to answer!
