VAGRANT of moving water, brother to the Mirror of Shadow, though denied his stillness; for he cannot hold an image, being always troubled, and so he keeps the blackness and lets the reflection go. He appeareth as a broad slick of black oil sliding past banks of blazing white, his surface roughened so that he gives back only a low, darkened shimmer, drinking the light without returning it. His office is to show the dark water that moves, the third water of this codex: the deep flowing kind, broken just enough to reflect nothing and deep enough to drink all. The white wood that crowds his banks is not mirrored there.
