RAVEN of the heights and the depths, who governeth the blackening of the heavens and the still waters. He appeareth as a sky turned to pitch in full noon, starless and without sun, behind which the white fire of the canopy is made to blaze. His office is to drink the scattered light of heaven, by which the sky is falsely painted blue, and to swallow the long light from off the face of the waters. One thing alone escapes him: the clouds and the rising mist, which he cannot blacken, and which stand against his darkness like islands of white flame.
