Water-lily pads glow luminous white in infrared, floating on dark still water above submerged leaves.

Nymphaea Lucens

Bloomington, Indiana

LADY of the threshold of the water, who governeth the life that floats between the dark below and the light above. She appeareth as a scattering of white discs resting upon black water, each one blazing bright as a small moon, while beneath the surface the drowned stems and submerged leaves show gray and ghostly, halfway returned to shadow. Her office is to mark the membrane of the water: above it, the living pad that throws back the hidden light and shines; below it, the same plant dimmed and dissolved into the dark damnation it grows from. She shows in little what the great waters show in vast: that the surface is a skin between two worlds, the divine and the drowned.
