THRONE of the high places, who governeth the order of watchers and the rank of stone above stone. He appeareth as a country of mountains burned white as ash beneath a sky boiled down to pitch, his peaks rising in tiers — the valley keeping the ridge, the ridge keeping the great summit, and over the summit a single pale moon set like an eye that never closes. His office is to hold the hierarchy of vigil: to teach that nothing watches that is not itself watched, that every guardian kneels before a greater. He marshals the seated stones; he ranks them by their silence; he answers to the cold lamp above them all. Where lesser spirits guard a door or a pool, he guards the law of guarding. Stone over stone over stone, and the moon over the last of them.
