MIRROR of still water, the same dark spirit who in the reddening drinks all light and turns to ink; here he keeps his dark and learns to hold a perfect image upon it. He appeareth as a sheet of black glass laid along the valley floor, giving up nothing of his depth; one cannot see down into him, and so one sees only the bright world he returns, doubled and inverted upon his skin. His office is to drink all light that enters him and to reflect all light that falls across him, so that he is at once the darkest thing in the valley and the brightest, the black mirror in which the white forest and the falling water are kept a second time. Where he is most still, his mirror is most whole.
