HALL of the twin vault, eldest of the arch-house, sister to the slender gate and to the Elder of the Arch. She appeareth as two great spans of pale rose sandstone sprung from one root, the larger sweeping overhead and a second opening at her side, so that whoever enters stands roofed in stone and looks up through her two windows into a sky deep and cold as Prussian dye. Her office is to double what a single arch can promise: to carry the rock upon two openings, and to make a vaulted chamber where her kin make only a door. Where the slender one is fragile and alone and the Elder is pierced toward his ruin, she is vast and twinned and built to endure. The wind that unmade her kindred works upon her too, but slowly, for it has twice as much to take.
