TWAIN of falling water, twin-born, who leaps from the cliff and through it at once. She appeareth as two white columns descending side by side over a wall of moss and fern, while all around them the stone itself weeps — for the river here runs half above the ground and half within it, and the buried half comes out of the cliff-face in a hundred silver seeps. Her office is to show that the rock is not solid but only patient: water moves through the mountain’s body as breath moves through a sleeper, and emerges astonished into the light. The gilded trees stand at the brink to watch the twins fall together. Of all the waters of the Work, she alone arrives from two worlds at one moment.
