Custos Luminis

Yosemite National Park, California

WARDEN of the high places, and a keeper of light. He wears no snow-crown; the charge he keeps instead is the light itself. He appeareth as a vast sheer brow of pale stone rising sunlit from a sea of gilded rock, half his face given to the low gold of the sun and half held back in shadow, the line between them drawn clean across the rock. His office is to stand at the threshold and take the first and last light of the day full upon his face, holding it a long moment after the valley below has gone dim. His lordship is one of brightness; the gilded wood gathers at his feet as if to warm itself, and the sky behind him is left deep and cloudless, that nothing should compete with the light he is given to keep.
