THREAD of the long descent, the Thread of the Sky seen under the gilding. He appeareth far off across the river, the same white fall let down the same gray wall — but the valley about him has traded its blood for gold, the broadleaf wood burning amber along his river and the light arriving as if through honey. His office is unchanged, for a thread serves any color of cloth: he binds the snows to the river here exactly as he does in the burning year. Only the realm is altered, and the realm is everything else. He is the proof the codex keeps repeating: that the world is one world, and the light decides the rest.
