DOORKEEPER of the threshold between death and life, and the strange sibling of the Way Among Giants; for where that spirit leads among the living, this one keeps vigil over the dead. He appeareth a single great trunk gone gray and lifeless among the gilded living, struck by a shaft of open light that falls now where his own crown once stood and let no light pass. His office is to mark the place where a giant has fallen and the canopy has opened, where the light that his living body long withheld now floods down to the floor and wakes the gold beneath him. He neither gilds nor glows, being dead; but he is the reason the young growth at his feet burns so bright. He is the door death holds open for life to enter.
