Silva Aurea

Spencer, Indiana

MATRON of the first rank, and the third face of that one spirit who bleeds as the Blooded Wood and shines as the Gleaming Wood; here she stands between her sisters at the threshold, wearing something of each. She appeareth in the canopy as pale gold, as a forest gilded at dawn or struck with a low amber fire that is half daylight and half something older. Her office is the half-revelation: to show in the same leaf the green by which the world knows the forest and the hidden light by which it does not, and to wed the two in gold. She is perhaps the most truthful of all the workings, for she alone shows the living leaf wearing both its faces at once, the seen and the hidden held in suspension together.
