ROAD of passage, running between the great pillars of the living world. He appeareth a narrow way threading upward among trunks too tall to be seen whole, their crowns lost far above, the gilded ferns crowding bright along the path and the dappled light falling in scattered coins upon the forest floor. His office is to lead the wanderer in among the giants and to keep something always hidden; the trees cannot be seen whole, only their reaching, and the way bends out of sight before it ends. The light that reaches the floor has been spent coming down through the canopy, and arrives gilded and broken, a little of it at a time.
