He appeareth as a sheet of ink laid flat upon the land, deeper and more silent than any night, swallowing all light that falls upon it save the pale of heaven mirrored at his skin. His office is to drink the long light whole. Where his shadow lies deepest, there the water is most pure and most still; the troubled and the shallow he cannot fully claim.
