A lone tree with fiery red-orange foliage stands at a canyon rim, the vast blue-hazed gorge of the Grand Canyon receding behind it.

Arbor in Abysso

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

SENTINEL of the first rank, a lone face of the Blooded Wood who keeps watch where no forest will grow. He appeareth a single tree burning red at the very lip of a great emptiness, rooted in the last of solid ground, holding his crown of fire against a void that falls away blue and cold and deep behind him. His office is to stand alone at the edge, where the canopy cannot mass at his back and he must be the whole of the living world alone. He burns no less brightly for being solitary; if anything he burns more, being the only thing in that realm with blood still in it. Behind him the abyss keeps its distance and its blue, for it is all bare stone and far air, and has no life in it to redden.
