REGENT of the mountain water, who holds court below the crowned peaks. He appeareth as a broad lake stirred to pewter beneath summits still wearing their snow, the forests on every slope gone to deep red and the clouds above banked like wool lit from beneath. His office is to gather the kings’ reflections and keep none of them: the wind writes across his surface all day, and every crown offered to him is broken into light and handed back. The red wood crowds down to his shore from all sides, drawn as all things are drawn to water in a high country. He is the commons of the realm, the one ground where crown and blood and cloud must meet.
