Rex Coronae

Glacier National Park, Montana

KING of the high places in his own right, brother to the King of Three and second of the crowned sovereigns. He appeareth a single great horn of stone thrust above a burning valley, his summit wearing the last of the white where his lower flanks have already gone to blood. He is of the same two natures as his brother, the dark cliff-face that drinks the light and the bright snow-crown that throws it back in turn; but where the King of Three rules by his three heads, this one rules alone, the highest thing in a realm that bends toward him. His office is to stand as the seat of the crown, the place from which the whole land is seen to descend. He is strongest while the snow still holds his head, and as it fails him through the season he reddens from the feet upward, until the crown is the last of him left burning.
