The three snow-capped peaks of the Grand Teton rise above an infrared-red forest, with golden wildflowers blurred in the foreground.

Rex Trium

Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming

MONARCH of the high places, the body of the Work made stone. He appeareth as three crowned heads of rock standing over a burning realm, and he is of two natures warring in one body: below, the dark mountain-flesh that drinks the light and will not give it back, mortified and earthbound; above, the white crown that blazes almost as bright as heaven itself, throwing back the hidden light entire. His office is to show the Work in a single figure: the base matter and the exalted crown, the black stone and the white fire, divided at the snowline and bound in one king. He is most himself at the turning of the year, coronated by the first snow and the forest below him coming to blood; and the higher his crown of snow, the brighter he burns.
