A turquoise river winds through a deep canyon at dusk, its forested slopes rendered blood-red by infrared beneath mauve hills and a pale pink sky.

Silva Sanguinea

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

POWER of the first rank, who governeth the turning of the leaf to blood. He appeareth in the high canopy as a fire that does not consume, the foliage burning crimson while the wood stands unharmed beneath. His office is to make visible the red, and the deeper calorific red, that every living leaf reflects in secret, and to bind away the green by which we falsely know it. He is most powerful in full summer, when the work of the leaf is greatest, and weakest in the dead season, when there is little life in which to revel.
