An infrared rendering of the Oregon coast at sunset; two dark sea stacks rise like watchmen above a blue Pacific, set against a banded blue-to-rose sky, with a foreground field of vivid red coastal scrub in the warm light.

Vigiles Litoris

Brookings, Oregon

SENTINEL of the standing rank, who keepeth the watch above the western water. They appear as two stacks set shoulder to shoulder upon the headland, dark and crowned with the last warmth, the banded sky behind them passing from rose to a deep and waking blue while the cold Pacific lies flat at their feet; before them a field of coastal scrub burns scarlet, every leaf and frond made flesh by the light it throws away. Their office is to abide where the living things keep vigil with the stone, to hold the edge of the land against the indifferent sea, to outlast the warmth that gilds them. They were here before the longing and will keep their post when it has gone; the fire passes over them, and they do not move.
