Seen from the canyon rim, a white waterfall plunges into a gorge of conifers turned red by infrared, a jade river winding away below.

Vox Cataractae

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

HERALD of falling water, the voice of the Glowing Waterfall, met at the canyon’s rim where he is heard before he is seen. He appeareth far below the wanderer, a white column loosed into a gorge of red-crowned forest, the river running jade away from his feet; but his sound arrives first, filling the canyon to its brim as water fills a vessel. His office is to declare the falls to all the realm: the eye must come to the edge to find him, but the voice goes out over the wood and the canyon walls and is refused by none. The Sister has shown this same view in her blue working, silenced; here he has his sound again. A king may be diminished by distance, but a voice is not.
