El Capitan's sheer granite face rises in deep cyanotype blue, framed by frost-white conifers under a darkening sky.

Custos Noctis

Yosemite National Park, California

SENTRY of the high places, and the night-watch of the Warden of Light. By day that warden takes the first and last light of the day full upon his face; the Sister shows the other half of the charge, the long blue hours when the light is elsewhere and must be kept by memory alone. He appeareth as the same sheer brow of stone, pale against a deepening sky, the wood at his feet gone from gilded to hoarfrost-white as if the cold of the watch had settled into it. His office is to prove that the keeping does not end at dusk; a warden who held only the day would be half a warden. What he guards through the dark he returns at morning, unspent.
