The light of this working

Not a stage of the Work, but its Sister, who keeps the oldest working of them all. The other pages of this codex borrow the hidden light that living things throw back; here the unseen light is made to do the writing itself. A page is prepared with salts of iron and set out beneath the sky, and the oxidizers beyond violet strike it and turn its iron to a deep and unfading blue; what the light touches is transmuted, and what is shielded stays pale as bone. The page is then drowned, and the water fixes what the light confessed. She is the patient one of this house — her instruments are sun, iron, and water — and every spirit she portrays is shown twice-born: once in its own light, and once in hers.
