KING of the night court, the second of the crowned sovereigns. In the reddening he wears the last of the white above a valley gone to blood; here the Sister has put out the fires of his realm, and he is crowned instead by the cold light, the moon itself standing small and attendant in the sky above his head. He appeareth a single great horn of stone in a kingdom of blue, his snows and his shadows traded into one cloth. His office is to show that a true crown does not need the day: what the sun gilds, the moon proves. He is the same king on either throne, and the realm bends toward him in the dark exactly as it does in the burning.
